Hevy MCP vs Tally: connect an AI agent to your workout log
Updated
Hevy is a popular workout tracker for iPhone, Android and the web. Tally is an iPhone workout log that is made for AI agents. You can connect both to Claude and other agents through MCP. They do it in different ways.
The short answer
- Choose Hevy if you use Android or the web, want a social feed, or already have years of data in Hevy. To connect an agent, you need a paid Hevy Pro subscription and a community MCP server.
- Choose Tally if you use an iPhone and want your agent to plan your training. Tally runs its own MCP server, and the app is free.
Hevy MCP and Tally side by side
| Hevy + hevy-mcp | Tally | |
|---|---|---|
| Who makes the MCP server | A community project: hevy-mcp (open source). Hevy does not make one. | Tally makes and runs its own server. |
| Cost of agent access | Hevy Pro: from $2.99 a month, or $23.99 a year, in the US App Store. The Hevy API needs Pro. | Free. |
| Sign-in | Your Hevy API key, plus OAuth on the hosted server. | OAuth 2.1, or an API key from the Tally app. |
| Platforms | iPhone, Android and web | iPhone only |
| Workouts planned on dates | No. A routine has no date: you choose one at the gym. | Yes. Each planned workout shows in the app on its day. |
| Where your program lives | In Hevy routines. The agent updates a routine to change your weights. | With your agent: in the chat, a project or a file. Each week, the agent plans the next week from your logged sets. |
| What the agent can write | Completed workouts, routines, routine folders, exercise templates and body measurements. | Planned days: add, change, move, skip and delete. It can add custom exercises to a plan. It can log, change or delete finished workouts when you ask. |
| Sets you already logged | The agent can create and update workouts. | The agent can log, change or delete them when you ask. You can undo each change for 7 days. |
The main difference: planned days on a calendar
In Tally, your agent plans on dates. A plan for next week is, for example, 4 workouts on 4 days, and each one shows in the app on its day. Your program lives with the agent: in the chat, in a project, or in a file such as CLAUDE.md. Each week, the agent puts the next week on your calendar, with weights from the sets you logged. It also sees any planned day that you missed or skipped.
In Hevy, an agent creates and updates routines. A routine is a template with no date: you choose one at the gym. The hevy-mcp server has no tool that plans a workout for a date. To change your weights from week to week, the agent must update the routine.
What an agent can change in Tally, and how you undo it
An agent can log a workout you did, change one, or delete one, but only when you ask. Each change keeps the earlier version for 7 days, and the agent can restore it. Days you built or edited in the app stay as they are unless you ask.
The full list of tools and rules is in the MCP server reference.
Try Tally with your AI agent
Tally does not import Hevy data. You can start fresh: your agent plans the first week from the working weights that you give it.
